The South Carolina State House
The South Carolina State House is located at 1100 Gervais Street in downtown Columbia. The building is over 100 years old and offers architectural tidbits, art and history to those interested in exploring its rooms. Guided tours are offered Monday through Friday free of charge. Hours of operation are 9:00 to 5:00 during the week and every first Saturday of the month. There is also a gift shop to buy souvenirs from.
The state house grounds is also open to the public. Beautifully landscaped, enjoy your lunch on a park bench beneath sweeping trees. Or spend the afternoon admiring all the monuments and plaques such as the George Washington Monument, the Confederate American Soldier and the African-American Monument. There are many monuments commemorating the numerous wars America has been is such as the Spanish American War. Or admire the Revolutionary War Soldier headstone, the only gravesite on the state house grounds.
