If you are parents to little ones, you probably have realized many activities are geared towards older children. Limited by short attention spans, unbridled energy and tiny bodies, it is difficult to take the children to the movies, museums or amusement parks. EdVenture in downtown Columbia is the exception: geared towards children 12 years and under, it is the largest children’s museum in the South.
EdVenture has numerous exhibits to make learning fun and entertaining for youngsters. Not only that, but running around, touching and loud laughing is encouraged ensuring your little one a great seeing/touching experience they won’t find elsewhere.
One exhibit, Eddie, is the largest man-made child in the world at 40 feet. Children can crawl inside Eddie and explore his heart, brain, stomach and intestines. World of Work is an exhibit incorporating a variety of jobs the child can perform, such as being a farmer on a John Deer tractor or suiting up as a fireman, complete with firefighter outfits and a real fire truck. Children can also learn about bones, teeth and joints in the exhibit Body Detective. Other exhibits are the Great Outdoors, Critter Garden, Maker Works and My Backyard. Blooming Butterflies is a seasonal exhibit open May 4 thru October 6 and is included in the admission to EdVenture. This beautiful exhibit is home to 20-plus species of butterflies.
The museum has after school programs and summer camps. The camps are age-based and whether it is science, healthy cooking, fire safety or making toys, there is certainly something to interest even the hardest-to-please little one.
Located at 211 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC 29201, EdVenture is open Monday thru Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sundays, the museum is open from noon to 5:00 p.m. For more information, please visit http://www.edventure.org/.
