The Columbia State Fair
When there’s a briskness in the air, the leaves are starting to change colors and college football is on the television, that means only one thing: the Columbia State Fair is in town!!! Every October, the Fair opens its gates and embraces the residents of South Carolina with wide arms. Organized in 1869, the State Fair is part of a time-honored tradition in many families.
The Fair absolutely has something for everyone. Numerous exhibits include flower shows, sand sculptures, petting zoos and so much more. Enjoy history? Take a walk back in time in Heritage Village and observe blacksmith demos and a mule-powered sugar cane press. Every day of the Fair, there is an artist or an author displaying their work and available for questions.
Stage shows such as Nascar Night and K9’s in Flight are free with general admission. Concerts are held at the Pepsi Grandstand and showcases well-known and up-and-coming artists. Boyz II Men, Newsboys and Jake Owens are just a few singers that have performed at the Fair.
What fair wouldn’t be complete without rides and great fair foods? Enjoy the Ferris Wheel, the Matterhorn and Bumper Cars. The fair also has kid-friendly rides such as the Tea Cups. Around lunchtime, nibble on corn dogs, candy apples, funnel cakes, turkey legs and so much more.
Located at 1200 Rosewood Drive, the fair is open for eleven days. The hours for the fair vary daily so please check out http://www.scstatefair.org/.
