Manufacturers say rising jobs tax could stall hiring

Bosch plant workers Several manufacturers said today they may postpone hiring or even relocate expansions to other states after receiving increases of 200% or more to their employment insurance tax bills. Gov. Nikki Haley, meanwhile, stood her ground on the new rates, arguing that the new structure taxes those businesses that have historically had the most claims.

Westinghouse wins $400 million fuel contract

The contract is valued in excess of $400 million, and includes fuel fabrication services for the existing reactor there, as well as for two new nuclear power units in the early stages of construction. First delivery is to occur in 2012, and the contract runs through 2033.

State saves nearly $24 million from bond refinancing

The state has reached agreement to refinance more than $340 million dollars in taxpayer funded general obligation debt and $20.8 million of the University of South Carolina’s state-institution debt.

Coker College establishes Marion County campus

Beginning on March 14, students will be able to pursue Coker College’s fully accredited, baccalaureate degrees in business, social work and sociology/criminology in the Marion County Adult Education building at 410 East Liberty St. in downtown Marion.

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has named Marti Mahaffey vice president of marketing and chief business development officer for its Government Programs division.

Village at Sandhill hires new general manager

Jeffrey L. Harper has been named Sandhill’s new general manager. He has more than 25 years of property management and marketing experience, and he joined Sandhill from Simon Property Group where he managed a regional shopping center in the Philadelphia area.
