The South Carolina State House
On March 22, 1786, the capitol city of South Carolina was moved from Charleston to an area along the Congaree River which belonged to Colonel Thomas Taylor .The first map of South Carolina showed the new location of the State House which was to be located on a prominent hill. The final State House, which stands overlooking Gervais Street today, took 56 years to complete. The cost of the building exceeded $3,450,000. The 130,673 square foot building is constructed of granite that came from a quarry only two miles away. But the State House is more than a magnificent building - Within its walls reside the hopes, dreams, integrity, and trust of the citizens of South Carolina.
