Transportation equipment tops S.C. exports to China

The largest export category from South Carolina to China in 2011 was transportation equipment, at $1.7 billion, followed by chemicals at $271 million, waste and scrap at $257 million, machinery at $234 million, and computers and electronics at $170 million.

Aflac workforce to reach 825 by end of year

Acquisition of Columbia-based Continental American has led to rapid growth of Aflac’s group supplemental insurance market. The insurance provider currently employs 450 people in the Midlands, with plans to reach 500 employees by summer.

Diversified Plastics expanding in Dillon County

The maker of material handling containers and carts said today it plans to expand its current manufacturing facility in Dillon County. The $2.5 million investment is expected to generate 15 new jobs.

$10M contract awarded for new S.C. Reserve center

The new Reserve center will be located northeast of Orangeburg on Cook Road, and will serve as the home for eight Army Reserve units. The award went to Group III Mgt. Inc., of Kinston, N.C., which bested 14 other bids, according to a Defense Department release.

Columbia National Walk at Lunch Day set for Statehouse

The sixth annual National Walk at Lunch Day, a program created by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to help improve personal health and decrease the cost of health care for employers and employees, is set for April 25. S.C. BlueCross will sponsor the event in Columbia on the Statehouse grounds from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
