Clyburn: New post will help me help S.C.

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn believes that the new post of assistant minority leader will give him a prominent role, especially on issues involving federal dollars.

Federal unemployment programs scheduled to end

The various federal unemployment extension programs provided for by Congress through the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2010 are scheduled to expire Nov. 30.

Medical device maker joins S.C. research project

Hospitals from across South Carolina and a medical technology manufacturer based in Michigan have joined in a pilot program to help fund biomedical research at the state’s three research universities.

Allendale County to get biomass plant  

Southeast Renewable Energy will build a 15-megawatt biomass energy facility in Allendale County, which currently has double-digit unemployment. Construction should begin in early 2011, and the plant is expected to create 20 new jobs in the next five years.

SCRA’s SC Launch invests $200,000 in Vitasol

Vitasol, a company spun off from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, is receiving the investment as it works to bring a more advanced intravenous fluid to the market.

Sonoco names vice president for European operation

The Hartsville-based packaging company said Adam Wood will become division vice president and general manager of the company’s European tube, core and paperboard operations in 2011.
