Duke Energy Corp. will acquire Progress Energy in a stock purchase and debt assumption agreement valued at $26 billion, the two companies announced today. Duke said the merger makes it the nation’s largest utility.

Sleet, snow, slush bring state to a halt

A winter storm began blowing across South Carolina early this morning, putting road crews, emergency management officials and first responders on high alert as bridges were closed and traffic snarled for those who tried to make it in to work.


Firestone to close plant in Kingstree

Firestone Building Products has announced it will close its plant in Kingstree in mid-2011 as a result of over-capacity. The company said that over the next few months, it will consolidate manufacturing of ethylene propylene diene monomer roofing membrane into its larger facility in Prescott, Ark.

Haley to nominate Budget and Control Board post

Gov.-elect Nikki Haley announced that she plans to nominate Eleanor Kitzman, former director of the state Insurance Department, as executive director of the S.C. Budget and Control Board. Haley also said she plans to recommend S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles director Marcia Adams as the next chief of staff of the agency.

 


Clemson chairman says impact of rail plan unclear

University Board Chairman David Wilkins said much remains unclear because the only official action that the state has taken is to condemn the land where the Clemson University Restoration Institute now is based.

Presbyterian College names new vice president

Presbyterian College has named Deborah J. Thompson of DeLand, Fla., vice president for enrollment and communications. She is currently vice president for enrollment management at Stetson University in DeLand.
