Town offers use of Gibson Pond to Club – The Town of Lexington is offering the Lexington Wildlife Chapter use of Gibson Pond. “We want to do whatever we can to help them mitigate the situation” said Lexington Mayor Randy Halfacre. He said Gibson Pond, which is town-owned, could serve as a temporary home for the Wildlife Chapter’s 150 members or a long-term situation. On April 1, Lexington Town Council voted 3-1 (with 3 member absent to sell Barr Pond, where the Lexington Wildlife Chapter hosts needy children and disable veterans. The Wildlife Chapter does not think Gibson Pond will fit its needs. The club members were not entirely cold to the idea. “We appreciate the town’s offer of the use of the Gibson Pond facility. While it won’t address all of our needs, we will certainly keep that in mind as we could possibly host some outdoor events there.” Barr Pond is still the ideal location for the club’s events.
Senator quietly pushes online tax law – The online sales tax war is far from over. U.S. Senate majority leader Harry Reid, D-New Mexico, is quietly seeking to force retailers to collect sales taxes nationally. A similar fight over online sales taxes almost cost Lexington County its huge Amazon.Com distribution center and up to 2,000 promised jobs last year. An 11th hour state legislative vote authorized Amazon to ask its customers to pay the S.C. sales tax but did not require them to collect It for the state. Amazon had stopped construction and said they would not locate here if required to collect sales taxes. Historically Congress has declined to support online sales tax collections.
Sheriff’s Department honored at “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” – Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands honored the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday, April 18 as the Most Supportive Strutters at the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, recognizing the Sheriff’s Dept. for having 87 deputies and employees participate in the event in order to show support for sexual assault and abuse victims. Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Capt. Mark Jones, who participated in the event, accepted the Most Supportive Strutters award on behalf of the Sheriff’s Dept. The Sheriff’s Dept. also received the Most Supportive award in 2012.
Home sales still spiking – Another monthly report and more good news for the Lexington housing market. Homes sales rose 15.2% in the Greater Columbia area, which includes Lexington County, in March. The rate of sales is based on a comparison from the same month of 2012. The data is released by the S.C. Realtors. The rate of sales has been increasing month-to-month for more than a year. Ray Stoudemire is a real estate broken for Lexington’s Russell-Jeffcoat office. He said, as an agent, he is experiencing a recovering housing market. “ I see improving sales. It’s getting better, “he said. Stoudemire has been in real estate sales for more than 40 years.
Home building increasing in Lexington – Home building in Lexington County is on the upswing and mortgage lending may be better, too. Al Edens is a Lexington mortgage broker who is seeing a log of new business in 2013. “It began a little slow at the first of the year, but lately business has been strong,” said Edens.
