Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 10-03-2011

Doing nothing may triple US 378 traffic delays –Local officials agree. Re-routing Corley Mill Rd. won’t solve a growing traffic nightmare at U.S. 378. But it is part of a plan to alleviate the traffic woes growth in Lexington is creating and help ease the shock of three new schools opening near U.S. 378 and I-20. “The school is already here,” state Sen. Jake Knotts told more than 110 people at a traffic meeting in Zion Lutheran Church on Corley Mill Rd. last Thursday evening. “The traffic is the problem and we’re going to have to deal with it.” Re-routing Corley Mill with a traffic circle at Riverchase Way and directing traffic on a new road from Riverchase to 378 at Northside Drive or between Northside and the current Corley Mill exit could cost $2 to 4# million. Expanding five lanes on 378 at I-20 and Ginny Lane into seven lanes to Northside Dr. would also help ease traffic, said state Dept. of Transportation Technical Applications Director Dipak Patel. With no highway money, the seven lanes would be created by squeezing traffic lanes and restriping lines. Lexington County has pledged $100,000 for the project, councilman Johnny Jeffcoat said. Lexington District 1 which is building three new schools in the area, has pledged to help with construction costs. Many in attendance were upset that traffic solutions weren’t considered before the district began building. :We’re going to have traffic problems no matter what you do?” asked one neighbor. “Correct,” Patel replied. If nothing is done, traffic delays in the next two years will “double and almost triple.” Many residents blasted the school district for building three schools in their area. Others supported the district’s educational excellence.

County students lead in college test scores – Lexington County students are once again on top of state college test scores. The national average is 1,500 and the state 1,436. Composite scores for the district’s four high schools : Gilbert 1,438; Lexington 1,558; Pelion 1,524 and White Knoll 1,417.

Lexington Medical Center hosts Women’s Night Out – Lexington Medical Center will host its annual Women’s Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Embassy Suites hotel on Greystone Blvd. in Columbia. The event recognizes October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honors cancer survivors and their families. More than 500 people attend each year. The event features a silent auction, physician exhibits, makeup demonstrations, signature cocktail, fashion show by Belk featuring breast cancer survivors, and a dinner and talk with a keynote speaker. This year’s speaker is Emory Austin a 20 years breast cancer survivor who will deliver a motivational speech about how her scary and unexpected cancer diagnosis became a great teacher and brought renewed purpose, balance and priorities to her life and the lives of others.
