Midlands industrial real estate market improves

The vacancy rate for the industrial space in the Midlands fell to 10.7% as nearly 150,000 square feet of manufacturing and distribution space was absorbed during the third quarter, NAI Avant reported. Key sales transactions for the quarter included Spirax Sarco’s acquisition of 35,800 square feet at 1101 Carolina Pines for $1.9 million.

Passenger traffic up at Columbia airport

The airport reported that passenger count was up .7% in October to 44,828, compared to 44,536 for the same month in 2010. Overall, passenger traffic has increased in four of the past five months compared to a similar stretch in 2010.

National shopping center developer rebrands itself

Edens & Avant will now simply be known as Edens. The brand transition and name change were announced this week at the International Council of Shopping Center’s annual trade show in New York. The company has regional headquarters in Columbia.

S.C. farm bureau president re-elected to eighth term

South Carolina Farm Bureau President David Winkles was re-elected to his eighth two-year term on Saturday, as head of the state's largest general farm organization and its affiliate companies. Winkles is a native of Sumter County, where he ran his family’s farming operation for more than 30 years.

SmartState speaker encourages collaboration

Saul Singer, co-author of Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle, said countries need to leverage their resources and strengths to create partnerships across international borders. At the conference, Singer cited a trip organized by Jonathan Zucker, who led a South Carolina delegation to Tel Aviv in November.
