Amazon construction under way

The distribution center will be a three-story building of 2.4 million square feet. Completion is slated for Oct. 1. Chuck Whipple, economic development director for Lexington County, said the Amazon center, which is expected to bring more than 1,200 jobs to the Midlands, is projected to be a $100 million investment.

Columbia to put money into Main Street facades

The initial focus area for an incentive program to improve building facades within targeted redevelopment areas comprises 36 blocks bounded by Gervais, Elmwood, Assembly and Marion streets. While the entire district is eligible to apply, the blocks of 1200-1700 Main Street are the city’s highest priority.

At a town hall meeting Monday in Greenville, Gov. Nikki Haley stood her ground against resistance from some businesses over higher unemployment insurance bills. She also challenged lawmakers to get to work enacting her agenda.
