Unemployment repayment could be stretched out

Responding to objections by employers that new unemployment insurance rate increases are too steep, lawmakers at a Senate hearing said they could consider reducing a repayment to the federal government until more jobs are added to the state’s economy. South Carolina owes more than $900 million used to cover jobless claims.

UCI Medical Affiliates reports rising income

Revenues for the company’s first quarter ended Dec. 31, 2010, were $22.1 million, an increase of $244,096, or 1.12% over revenues of $21.9 million for the same quarter in 2009. Net income was $619,340 for the quarter compared to net income of $234,297 for 2009.

Ellis Lawhorne attorney appointed chair of board


Attorney Karen Hudson Thomas, a shareholder in the firm, has been appointed chair of the Taxation Law Specialization Advisory Board of the Supreme Court of South Carolina's Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization.

Savannah River Site cleanup advances

SRS disposed of more than 1,000 cubic meters of legacy transuranic waste, or TRU, representing 20% of the 5,000 cubic meter inventory of TRU waste that will be disposed as part of the site’s Recovery Act program and accelerates the waste leaving South Carolina.

USC scientist researches birds in Chernobyl

Twenty-five years after the Chernobyl disaster, low-dose radiation has proved to have significant effects on normal brain development, shown by the size of birds' brains. Smaller brain sizes are believed to be linked to reduced cognitive ability.
