Columbia airport benefits from economic development

Columbia Metropolitan Airport looks forward to more business service as companies announce plans to open new facilities or expand in the Midlands. Regardless of the products being manufactured, the businesses will likely use the airport in one way or another, said airport executive director Dan Mann.

USC freshman class sets record for size, scores

This year’s freshman class at the University of South Carolina is the largest in size, and posted the highest achievement scores in the school’s history. The freshman class scored an average of 1199 on the math and reading portions of the SAT, USC reported.

University leaders outline SmartState’s potential

On the last day of the SmartState program’s inaugural conference, university leaders talked about the program’s success and challenges. The program allows the Medical University of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina and Clemson University to use state funds to create Centers of Economic Excellence.

West Columbia church site sells for $1.4M

Park Street Church of Christ purchased the former Northside Baptist Church sanctuary and three acres of land on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia. NAI Avant said four buildings totaling 56,000 square feet and nearly eight acres of land still remain for sale at the site.

Claflin University names two new trustees

The private university in Orangeburg added William H. Johnson and James K. Lehman to its governing board. Johnson is the senior attorney for the transportation company Norfolk Southern Corp., and Lehman is a partner at the Columbia-based law firm Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP.
