Duke Energy moving ahead to buy stake in V.C. Summer

At a University of South Carolina forum on clean energy, Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers indicated Thursday that Duke Energy believes multiple utilities participating in new nuclear construction will be the norm rather than the exception in the future.

Ports authority reports lower operating earnings

The S.C. State Ports Authority reported that operating earnings fell 45% year-over-year because of increased gate expenses and the move of two cranes across the harbor. Year-over-year revenues, however, increased 6.5% to $75.3 million.

Fluor Corp. reports 66% spike in 2011 earnings

Net income attributable to Fluor for 2011 reached $594 million, or $3.40 per diluted share, the engineering and construction company reported Wednesday. Fluor finished the year with its consolidated backlog at a record high, the company said.

Advance America may close foreign offices

The Spartanburg-based payday lender, which is being acquired by a company in Mexico City, said Wednesday it may cease operating in Canada and the U.K. by the end of the year.
