Haley appoints Keel new SLED chief

Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Mark Keel to be the next director of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Keel currently serves as director of the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

Columbia arms maker receives $28M Army contract

FN Manufacturing has contracted with the Army to provide 3,053 machine guns. The weapon, the M240L, is currently used by the United States military for combat operations.

SCE&G files for natural gas rate increase

The request by S.C. Electric & Gas Co. came under the Natural Gas Rate Stabilization Act, which is meant to keep rates from large fluctuations. If approved, the rate increase would be effective with the first billing cycle of November.

Foreclosures down nearly 30% from a year ago

The uneven ebb and flow of foreclosure paperwork could be masking more trouble for homes in distress, according to the CEO of a national foreclosure tracking company. But South Carolina and the U.S. experienced an average double-digit decline in the number of foreclosure filings last month compared with May 2010.

USC names deans of social work, education, Honors

An associate dean for academic affairs at a North Carolina university; an executive director of a preschool-through-graduate education program in Illinois; and the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will lead the University of South Carolina programs.
