NRC names inspectors for V.C. Summer nuclear plant

Patrick Donnelly and Mike Magee will work with Senior Resident Inspector Rahsean Jackson at the V.C. Summer nuclear construction site at Jenkinsville. Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors conduct regular inspections, monitor ongoing construction projects, and interact with plant workers and the public.

Smith named surgery chair at USC School of Medicine

Prior to joining the University of South Carolina, Dr. R. Stephen Smith worked as system chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery at West Penn Allegheny Health System and adjunct professor of surgery at Temple University School of Medicine. Smith’s surgical expertise includes trauma, critical care, emergency and general surgery.

AVX expands South Carolina operations

AVX Corp., which relocated its headquarters from Myrtle Beach to Fountain Inn in 2009, said Thursday it will invest $14 million and hire 279 employees over the next several years to expand its operations in the Upstate. The company manufactures electronic components.

Web business spurs Belk to open distribution center

Belk Inc., one of the South’s largest and oldest department store chains, cut the ribbon last week on a 512,000-square-foot distribution center in Union County, to accommodate the company’s growing e-commerce venture. Belk’s total sales revenue, combining stores and online, was $3.7 billion in 2011.

USC researchers use stem cells to speed bone growth

USC chemistry professor Qian Wang and his colleagues recently reported in Molecular Pharmaceutics that surfaces coated with bio-nanoparticles could greatly accelerate the early phases of bone growth. Their coatings reduced the amount of time it took to convert stem cells into bone nodules, from two weeks to two days.
