Hitt: Port transportation solution vital to state’s growth

The state’s new commerce secretary said access to the state’s port is vital to bringing additional high-end manufacturing to South Carolina — and that includes dual access for rail.

Tort reform bill passes House

The measure, which was passed 100 to 7, would limit punitive damages in lawsuits and require certain procedures in awarding damages. It has the support of many business organizations.

Sonoco reports record sales in 2010

In its earnings report today, the Hartsville-based packaging company reported record 2010 sales of $4.1 billion, an increase of 15% compared with $3.6 billion in 2009. Net income rose to $201.1 million in 2010, compared with $151.5 million in 2009.

 

Sustained economic growth expected this month

In its monthly outlook, Wells Fargo Securities pointed to consumer spending, equipment and software spending and nonresidential construction as positives. But it said the recovery is hampered by residential construction and municipal government spending.

Southeastern Freight opens second center in Charlotte

The Lexington-based company said it made the move in response to growing business in the region. Southeastern Freight is a regional less-than-truckload transportation company.

Mabry elected to national board of trial advocates group

H. Sam Mabry III, an attorney in the Greenville office of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd P.A., has been elected to the national board of directors for the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Richland County forms environmental planning division

The new agency’s responsibilities include provision of environmental and conservation expertise in support of the county’s comprehensive land use plan, strategic plan and neighborhood master plans.
