Avtec’s growth drove decision to build new HQ

Avtec plans to invest in a 46,000-square-foot headquarters building in Lexington County’s technology park, on a nine-acre site that will soon be annexed into the city of Lexington. Avtec agreed to create at least 25 new jobs in its fee-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement with the county.

Aiken Tech adding programs to train nuclear workers

With thousands of new jobs expected to be created in the nuclear industry, Aiken Technical College plans to launch programs to train nuclear welders and quality control technicians. The school's president made the announcement at the Nuclear Energy Assembly.

 


NRC chief labels nuclear plant ‘a good performer’

During a tour of the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station at Jenkinsville Tuesday, NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko said an inspector raised some minor issues concerning the construction of a new reactor unit. Also this week, Jaczko announced his resignation as chairman.

Adesso condominiums 93% sold

Holder Properties, the developer of Adesso condominiums on Columbia’s Main Street, announced that 102 of the units have been sold, leaving just eight homes remaining for sale. The remaining homes are priced between $160,000 to $340,000.

 

 


Moore School launches minority-business forum

The forum will take place June 5 in the Moore School’s Daniel-Mickel Center for Executive Education. The event will cover topics including marketing and promotion; human resources, taxation, legal and banking considerations; and government contract bidding.

SRS shuts down 1950s-era coal plant

At one time, the coal-powered facility was capable of generating 75 million watts of power, enough electricity to support the entire city of Aiken. Now, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions LLC is preparing the 280,000-square-foot, five-story building for deactivation.

 


Health Sciences S.C. adopts new strategic plan

The new strategic plan will help steer the organization during the next five years and beyond. HSSC said it will prioritize several of its existing efforts that help support its members’ research and clinical activities, including the use of health information technology.

First Boeing South Carolina 787 takes off

Boeing South Carolina checked another major milestone today when the first S.C.-built 787 flew for the first time. Boeing has been testing and preparing the Dreamliner for Air India, the airline that will accept the first few 787s from Boeing South Carolina.
