Jobs key to S.C. support for military bases

Military bases in South Carolina are a key cog in the state’s economic engine, Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom said at the first meeting of the state Military Task Force in more than a year. One study put the number of S.C. jobs that are directly or indirectly connected to the military at more than 142,000.

House overrides Gov. Haley’s DHEC veto

The S.C. House voted to override a veto issued by Gov. Nikki Haley for a resolution that suspends the authority of the Department of Health and Environmental Control over the Savannah River. The state Senate is now expected to vote on the veto as early as today.

 

 

Cargo security panel to hold first meeting

The Virginia-Carolinas Cargo Security Council is being formed to help curb cargo theft and share information on preventive measures within the supply chain. The first meeting will be held March 8 at the Columbia Conference Center.

Ameris acquires Central Bank of Georgia

Moultrie, Ga.-based Ameris Bank, which has nine offices in the Palmetto State, assumed $266.6 million in total deposits and $278.9 million in total assets in its FDIC-assisted acquisition of Central Bank of Georgia. All five offices of Central Bank of Georgia have reopened under the Ameris Bank banner.

 

Boeing breaks two world records with 787

The 787 broke the record for the longest flight of an airplane for its weight class and set an around-the-world speed record also for its weight class. At the North Charleston plant, the first Lowcountry-built Dreamliner moved into the final factory position on Sunday.
