Nuclear companies give $1.2M for USC research center

The private sector contributions will be added to $3 million given by the state’s SmartState Program to create a new center for the study of nuclear science and engineering. Progress Energy, Duke Energy, SCANA, the Shaw Group, Studsvik and Westinghouse were recognized Tuesday at the University of South Carolina.

Whole Foods Market seeks Midlands vendors

A vendors meeting will be held Feb. 28 at City Roots Farm in Columbia. Buyers will be in the Midlands to sample local and regional products and provide details on how to become a vendor at the future Whole Foods Market at the Cross Hill Market shopping center.

Clean energy forum set for Columbia this week

The program, which will include the CEOs of Fluor Corp. and Duke Energy as keynote panelists, will get under way at the Columbia Convention Center at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Energy policy, research and economic development will be discussed at the event.

787 nearing final position in Boeing’s S.C. facility

The first South Carolina-built 787 Dreamliner is one position away from completion in Boeing’s North Charleston final assembly facility. Now, the 787 is in Position 3, where workers are installing and testing electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems.

Haley: S.C. needs marketing to boost tourism industry

Gov. Nikki Haley said S.C. needs to be marketed as a major tourism destination to boost the tourism industry. More than 200 tourism leaders met in Greenville Tuesday at the state’s largest annual tourism conference to discuss the impact on the state’s economy.
