S.C. to get funds targeting waste, fraud in unemployment

The U.S. Department of Labor said $191 million that’s headed to the states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will be used to reduce improper unemployment insurance payment rates; upgrade the unemployment insurance tax and benefits system; and enable the design of technology-based tools to prevent, detect and recover improper payments.

S.C. gold mine yielding sustained growth

Canadian firm Romarco Minerals Inc. says it will continue exploration in hopes of reopening the Haile Gold Mine in Kershaw for business.

Business inventories increase in July

Inventories increased 0.4% in July, and June was revised up by 0.1%, leaving business inventory gains about in line with expectations. Business sales were solid, rising 0.7%.

Workshops help businesses expand

Economic development organizations and private consulting groups from across the state will host regional workshops to help businesses expand into new markets. Events will be held at Midlands Technical College's Northeast Campus in Columbia and at the BMW Zentrum in Greer.

Southern states see income decline, poverty increase

A report from the U.S. Census Bureau showed that declines in household income are continuing a trend that began a year before the recession for the entire United States. Southern states, which includes South Carolina, have the highest percentage of individuals living below the poverty line, the Census Bureau reported.

Global Vision Awards to honor Clyburn, Graham

David Wilkins, former speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives and former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, will speak alongside former S.C. representative and Columbia attorney I.S. Leevy Johnson before the presentations of the Global Vision Award to Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

The position will manage all research efforts, including compilation of data; and development of presentations, websites and marketing collateral.
