Bank of America No. 1 in Midlands bank rankings

The new rankings represent a reversal in positions for the two biggest banks in the Midlands region. Last year, Wells Fargo’s Wachovia bank had $3 billion in deposits and a 22% market share, compared with Bank of America’s $2.8 billion in deposits and 20% market share.

Deposits shift among big banks in S.C.

The three largest banks operating in South Carolina, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and BB&T expanded market share at least one percentage point each in the past year, while customers appeared to depart Carolina First after it was sold and rebranded TD Bank, according to figures released today by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Senate confirms Floyd for U.S. Court of Appeals

The U.S. Senate on Monday confirmed South Carolina’s Henry F. Floyd to the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond. Floyd has served as a U.S. District Court judge in Spartanburg. Monday’s Senate vote was 96-0.

Nagarkatti named USC VP for research

Prakash Nagarkatti, an internationally known researcher who has directed research at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, has been named USC’s vice president for research, subject to the approval of the board of trustees. He will be responsible for planning and implementing the university’s research priorities.

Haley appoints Florida man public safety director

Gov. Nikki Haley on Monday named Leroy Smith, a 22-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol who served as its chief of investigations, as the next director of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
