Dan Gabriel Cacuci will be professor of nuclear engineering, and holder of the first of two endowed chairs in the nuclear sciences, according to Tony Ambler, dean of the College of Engineering & Computing.

Packaging giant Sonoco posts record sales for 2011

The Hartsville-based diversified global packaging company said net income for 2011 rose 8.4% to $205.98 million from $189.97 million in 2010. Sales for 2011 were a record $4.498 billion, up 9% from $4.124 billion in 2010.

SCE&G nuclear project next in line for NRC

On Thursday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a construction permit for new nuclear construction at a Southern Co. plant near Augusta, Ga.

Small-Business group urges vote for right-to-work bill

Ben Homeyer, state director of the National Federal of Independent Business, called on the Senate to support the House’s effort and pass a bill that seeks to strengthen South Carolina’s right-to-work law.

Sonoco announces executive appointments

John Colyer has been promoted to vice president, global paper and industrial converted products. Ronald Leach has been named vice president of Sonoco’s recently expanded global protective packaging segment, elected an officer of the company and appointed to the executive committee. And R. Howard Coker has been named to the company’s executive committee and remains vice president, global rigid paper and closures.

The Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a full-time assistant professor of medicine. The position requires an MD degree, at least three years of internal medicine residency training leading to board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine, three years of training in an accredited Hematology/Oncology program, and a license to practice medicine in South Carolina.
