First Community earnings climb 123% in 2011

The holding company for First Community Bank reported a huge increase in net income for 2011 to $2.7 million. The president and CEO of First Community said residential mortgage banking and financial planning/investment advisory lines of business significantly contributed to the company’s results.

Haley calls for lower taxes, tort reform

In her State of the State address, Gov. Nikki Haley focused on the economic development record of her first year in office, noting the more than 20,000 jobs that have been pledged by employers. Haley also called for tax relief and tort reform.

Palmetto Health board elects 2012 officers

William L. Freeman III, the vice president of sales at VOA Canada, will be chairman of the Palmetto Health board in 2012. James E. Wheeler will be vice chairman. Palmetto Health is composed of four hospitals, and employs more than 8,000 people in the Midlands.

Lexington Medical opens cardiovascular practice

Lexington Medical’s new hospital physician practice will treat patients requiring cardiac, thoracic and vascular procedures including open heart surgery. Heart surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Travis will lead Lexington Cardiovascular, and Victor Gomez will serve as a physician assistant.

SCANA sells $250M worth of notes

The Cayce-based electric and gas utility plans to apply the net proceeds from the sale of the notes, together with other funds, to pay $250 million of its medium term notes due Feb. 1.
