Richland County Tax Hike Unlikely, Good News for Columbia SC Real Estate Owners

Richland County Council Members believe timing is wrong for a potential hike in property taxes. Although financial advisors are recommending a five percent hike to cover declining revenues in other areas, it appears that a property tax increase will not pass. Some Columbia, SC real estate owners and Richland County residents are already feeling the pinch of higher property tax bills as the property reassessment has occurred this year and tax bills have increased. Most council members believe this is just too much to ask with the economy in a recessionary phase. Projections for county revenues are indicating a $4 million decrease for next year and many economic factors are contributing to this decline; fewer business licenses, fewer building permits, drops in state-shared revenues, and other fees. One option to overcome the funding shortfall is to tap into the county’s rainy day fund which may alleviate some of the initial problem but does not provide a long term solution to the problem. Council members are currently looking at other budget areas which may be cut and consensus seems to be that the county does have room to trim some fat. A public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled for 6:00 PM on May 21, 2009.
